The Boys of Summer
Starring Lou Christie, Brian Hyland and Chris Montez
Summer was a fun time in the 1960’s and 70’s…….bikini’s, surfin’, music and dancin’! And The Boys of Summer were there, on America’s radio stations singing their hits that made the summer feel FUN!
Thus in August 1960, Brian Hyland, from Queens, NY, scored his first and biggest hit single at the age of 16, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, sold almost a million copies in the first two months of its release, and over two million copies in total. His next few hits “Sealed With A Kiss”, “The Joker Went Wild”, “Ginny Come Lately” and “Gypsy Woman” became memorable summertime hits.
Lightning and thunderstorms are a big part of summer, and Pittsburgh’s Lou Christie strikes gold with his records, “The Gypsy Cried”, “I’m Gonna Make You Mine”, “How Many Teardrops”. “Rhapsody In the Rain” and of course, the #1 charting “Lightning Strikes”. Fans of Lou know of his exciting stage presence and fabulous falsetto!
Growing up in the same town as The Beach Boys, Hawthorne, California, Chris Montez was influenced by all the surf, sand & beach ‘rock and roll’ music, and the early Latin flavored music that his idol Ritchie Valens had recorded a few years earlier. All the kids on the beach were dancing in the sand to Chris’ “Let’s Dance”, and when it was time for a summer romance “Call Me”, and “The More I See You” was on Top 40 radio, all summer long.
The Boys of Summer brings three great icons and the artistry of Rocky & the Rollers, the nation’s premier Rock ‘n Roll band, to back them up, for an evening of Summer Fun, August 30th at The Savannah Center.
