Bleed for your art.
Famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko asks his recently hired young assistant, Ken, the loaded question, "What do you see?" John Logan's visceral two-hander, Red, features artist Mark Rothko at the height of his career. Set in 1950s lower Manhattan, this biographical play illustrates Rothko struggle as he lands the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant. When Ken begins to challenge Rothko, he faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. This six time Tony Award winning play takes a compelling look at the ever-changing relationship between an artist and his creations.

The Fantasticks, by Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, is the world's longest running musical - running for over 50 years in New York City and entrancing generations of audiences the world over. The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall. The narrator, El Gallo, originally played by Jerry Orbach, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart, and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo's words that "without a hurt, the heart is hollow".  The famous score, which includes the classics Try To RememberThey Were You and Soon It's Gonna Rain, is as timeless as the story itself.

Ethel Merman was the best of the Broadway belters. What's a belter? She's the lady who comes out in the middle of the first act, plants her feet squarely on the stage and sings her song (preferably a raucous and stirring number) both louder and with more excitement than anyone in the show. And for 40 years you could always rely on "The Merm" to deliver the goods. When she retired from Broadway in 1970 she left people wondering if they would ever hear that sound again.

Fast forward to 2011. You CAN hear it again. Rita McKenzie and I wrote Ethel Merman's Broadway because we missed experiencing those classic Broadway musical moments. This show brings back that old Merman magic. New theatergoers can find out just what that magic is all about.
