DESCRIPTION

As America proudly celebrates the 250th Anniversary of Independence, The Villages comes alive with one of Broadway’s most beloved and acclaimed musicals — 1776. This is not your grade-school history lesson. This is the messy, magnificent, deeply human story of how the United States of America was born — argument by argument, compromise by compromise, and song by song.

At the heart of the story stands John Adams — stubborn, brilliant, and absolutely impossible to ignore. Determined to push the Continental Congress toward independence, Adams battles indifference, opposition, and sweltering Philadelphia heat with equal frustration. Alongside him, the incomparable Benjamin Franklin delivers wisdom and wit in perfect measure, while the poet and statesman Thomas Jefferson struggles to find the words that will echo through eternity — with a little help from his friends.

From the persuasive and passionate Richard Henry Lee to the conflicted and compelling Edward Rutledge, the characters of 1776 leap off the stage as real, flawed, and fascinating human beings. These weren’t marble statues — they were lawyers, farmers, and firebrands who argued, laughed, and agonized over every word of the most important document ever written.

And what words. What music. From the toe-tapping comedy of The Lees of Old Virginia to the soaring romance of He Plays the Violin, and the deeply moving power of Momma Look Sharp and Is Anybody There?, the score of 1776 runs the full emotional gamut. You will laugh out loud. You may wipe away a tear. You will leave the theater humming.

Make no mistake — this show is genuinely funny. The banter between Adams and Franklin alone is worth the price of admission. But woven through the comedy is real dramatic weight. The debates over slavery, loyalty, and the cost of freedom are as relevant and riveting today as they were in 1776. This is a musical that entertains and challenges in equal measure, reminding us that democracy has never been easy — and has always been worth fighting for.

As fireworks light up the summer sky across America this season, there is no better way to honor 250 years of independence than by witnessing its birth story told live on stage, with extraordinary performances, unforgettable music, and a story that still — after all these years — has the power to move us.

Don’t miss your chance to be in the room where it happened.
